Reader story: decade of depression and slavery, part-4

part 1part 2, part 3

Let’s look at this article: Obama vs. Art History President joins the ranks of politicians who suggest liberal arts disciplines don’t lead to jobs. Here is what than-President Barack Obama says:

“[A] lot of young people no longer see the trades and skilled manufacturing as a viable career. But I promise you, folks can make a lot more, potentially, with skilled manufacturing or the trades than they might with an art history degree.  Now, nothing wrong with an art history degree — I love art history. So I don’t want to get a bunch of emails from everybody. I’m just saying you can make a really good living and have a great career without getting a four-year college education as long as you get the skills and the training that you need.”

Here is what educators say:

Carol Geary Schneider, president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, said via email that she found the president’s rhetoric disappointing. “In recent years, we’ve sunk into a ‘what’s in it for me’ approach to learning, making career earnings the litmus test both for college and for different majors,” she said. “The president speaks well in principle about our responsibilities to one another in a democratic society. But he seems to have forgotten that college can build our desire and capacity to make a better world, not just better technologies. It was depressing to hear President Obama describe college mainly as vocational and/or technical training in the State of the Union address, and it’s even worse to have him casually dismiss one of the liberal arts — or even the whole idea of baccalaureate study — because you can earn good enough money in a skilled trade. The fact of the matter is that human beings need bread and roses — and people who help make things do it better, as Steve Jobs said and demonstrated repeatedly, when they study both the arts and technology.”

So let me put it straight: the educator is apparently unhappy when students that PAY hard-earned money, are actually demanding quality education? Are actually demanding anything in return for their investment???? In recent years, we’ve sunk into a ‘what’s in it for me’ approach to learning, making career earnings the litmus test both for college and for different majors

So you are not even allowed to ask a simple question “What’s in it for me??” So apparently a student should go to college and pay thousands of dollars, without receiving anything in return, except usual bullshit of “making a better world”?

Now let’s have a look here: Another Disgraceful Resignation, Another Golden Parachute   by Professor R.Doom. A few quotes:

The inspector general launched the inquiry into Northern Illinois’ hiring practices in 2014 following several anonymous tips. Illinois law requires state agencies to publicly bid out contracts for professional services from an independent contractor worth more than $20,000.

But the report found that the university hired nine employees between June 2013 and May 2015, paying them all more than$20,000, but never solicited bids for those jobs.

In all, investigators wrote, Northern Illinois spent more than $1 million on the five highest-paid of those employees.

……

The Poo Bah resigns. I encourage you to think back from jobs where you’ve said “I quit” to compare what you received to the Poo Bah’s bonus for quitting:

…a total package including a one-time payment of $450,000, equal to a year of his salary; a lump-sum payment of $137,500, which is in exchange for resigning his tenured position in the College of Business; and up to $30,000 for his “reasonable, unpaid expenses for legal counsel” relating to his time at the university…

— Isn’t it neat how admin get to award themselves tenured positions like that? It’s funny how admin hate tenure…except when it’s theirs.

Now read again the following:

In recent years, we’ve sunk into a ‘what’s in it for me’ approach to learning, making career earnings the litmus test both for college and for different majors,” she said. “The president speaks well in principle about our responsibilities to one another in a democratic society. But he seems to have forgotten that college can build our desire and capacity to make a better world, not just better technologies.

It is an outrageous, shameless PR to recruit and retain as many students as possible by feeding them all this nonsense of “making a better world”, so ADMIN cronies can have minimum of a $100,000 salaries plus a generous benefit package. And a minimum of a HALF MILLION dollars of severance pay when they resign. By the way, I cannot recommend enough the blog ofRight Honorable Professor R. Doom http://professorconfess.blogspot.com . I believe he is the ONLY person and the ONLY LEGITIMATE PROFESSOR in entire North America who gives an honest and trustworthy picture of THE FUCKING SHITHOLE, otherwise known as modern Academia.

Some more good news from Alberta: Alberta university presidents’ pay among top in Canada. Janet French Published on: July 1, 2016

The presidents of six Alberta universities took home more than $3 million in 2015, with some cashing the largest paycheques in the country for their post, say new figures published online Thursday.

It’s the first time Alberta’s post-secondary institutions were compelled by law to publish a sunshine list detailing the salaries of all employees who earn more than $125,000.

Alberta’s top-paid university academic looks to be University of Calgary nanotechnology engineer Steven Bryant, who earned more than $738,000 in salary and benefits last year.

The University of Calgary’s president, Elizabeth Cannon, earned $626,000 last year, according to that university’s disclosure.

A search of the 2015 listings reveal 92 University of Alberta employees, 27 at the University of Calgary, and five University of Lethbridge staff who received more than $300,000 a year in compensation.

University of Lethbridge president Michael J. Mahon earned $489,000 last year, which is more than presidents earned at the University of British Columbia, the University of Toronto or the University of Waterloo.

For those of you who are wondering where the hell Lethbridge is, it is a city of some 92 000 people in southern Alberta. Could anyone explain to me a necessity of having a university in the city of less than 100 000 inhabitants? Are we going to put a college in every village and hamlet???

Former University of Alberta president Samarasekera came under fire for her compensation, which totalled $1.2 million during her final year in the top post.

Southern Alberta Institute of Technology president David Ross was king of the college bosses, taking home more than $518,000last year.

Now, reminding you that a foreign-born “celebrated” PhD holder gets paid somewhere between 30 to 36k a year. I saw by my very eyes a job ad for the University of Calgary (whose president makes more that $600,000) for a position of a POST-DOC IN CRYSTALLOGRAPHY for a unbelievable amount of 36K ANNUALLY (that is ~ 28,500 USD). If you were wise enough, used all those advice and selected a good PI, you might get somewhere around 40k. If you happen to win a super-competitive and prestigious postdoctoral fellowship, you will get 45-50,000 per annum for 2 years. What an amazing deal! Make no mistake: you are working for slave wages, so the university administrators can make 100s of thousands of dollars in their salaries (not accounting for benefits!!!). Yes, you – postdoctoral slave! – are at the bottom of this pyramid. I hated every minute, every fucking second of my fucking postdoctoral experience. Yes, I have lied, lied, lied, lied, lied, lied to myself, I consciously deluded myself every day – because no normal person could accept such level of fucking humiliation!!!! Yes, I lied to myself – only not to lose my mind, I lied to myself not to jump out of the window!!!! I lied that there is some meaning in experiments which I ran, I pretended to have some interest in the research, while I knew in reality that I was slaving for a downright moron who got his professorial appointment only because he was endorsed by a BigShot. And university hired him exactly for this purpose – to bring MORE MONEY by slaving his postdocs to death. Yes, the UNIVERSITY knowingly hired ABUSIVE SLAVEDRIVER because they wanted to raise their profile and ranking and have more money and brag about great research. You know what? – FUCK ALL OF YOU!!!! YOU ALL ARE FUCKING MONSTERS AND MURDEREDRS!!!!!!!!

I remember hesitating to buy a piece of cheese or tiny bit of smoked meet. I always looked for deals in the store, I felt super-happy when I could spend whopping $100 on groceries. I was bullied by a colleague who told me that I do not ever deserve to eat deli meats, because I am a foreigner! Great workplace culture! I still remember face of Asian graduate student from neighbouring department – the face which was dead-pale and seemed swollen because of permanent malnutrition!!!!

Yes, I hated every second of this shit job called “postdoc”, because I knew very well that I was dying of fatigue and shopping crap at WalMart, so these glorious leaders, the great educators can line their pockets with hundreds of thousands of dollars of their salaries, while bitching about “making world a better place”, about new technologies, innovation and great value of education.  FUCK ALL OF YOUR FUCKING INNOVATION!!!!! YOU ARE THE SCUM OF THE EARTH!!!! SHAMELESS FUCKERS!!!!!!

AND FUCK ALL OF YOU, IGNORANT AUTISTIC POSTDOCS AND GRADUTE STUDENTS, SLAVING RIGHT NOW, AS I SPEAK, FOR PEANUTS IN DECREPIT LABS, BURPING AND FIGHTING STOMACK ACHES AFTER EATING YOUR SHITTY RAMEN NOODLES AND DRIED PIZZA!!!!! IT IS YOU WHO SUPPORT THIS ROTTEN SYSTEM OF SHAMELESS EXPLOITATION WITH YOUR SLAVE LABOR FOR SLAVE PAY!!!! KEEP MAKING WORLD A BETTER PLACE, YOU LOOSERS!!!!! YOU DESERVE ALL OF THIS SHIT AND THEN SOME MORE, YOU SUCKERS!!!!!! AND NOW GO AND WRITE ONE MORE GRANT APPLICATION FOR YOUR GLORIOUS PROFESSOR!!!!

Part 5 is coming soon.
