PhD – unknown knowns
There are known knowns; there are things we know that we know.

But there are also unknown unknowns – there are things we do not know we don’t know.

There is a fourth category that Rumsfeld missed.
It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you think you know that just ain’t so.
New PhD students think they know (unknown known) what PhD entails and have beautiful dreams about the future. Why? Because they did good in college.
Result = 6+ years of voluntary enslavement in academia with a total loss of self respect, debt and a bleak future.
